AN INTRODUCTION TO SINGLESTORE – PART 2

With an extensive background of more than 20 years in Data & Analytics, seeing all new technology and methods, I thought that the concept of databases has seen its last days in the data and analytics landscape. With all kinds of promising technologies, like Hadoop and Data Lakes, you think that the days of storing data into tables, handling performance issues and getting data into predefined tables are over.

In this second blog, I would like to dive deeper in the ‘what’ SingleStore is bringing to the table.

On September 9, 2021, we teamed up with Rick van der Lans and SingleStore in a webinar where we discussed and showed the concept of “Rationalizing Data Architectures with a Unified Database”. During this one-hour webinar Rick explained why the database-by-workload approach is complex and costly and why there is a need to rationalize data architectures in these modern times.

I explained Single Store’s multi-model architecture and universal storage to enrich your data analytics. You can find the webinar and a free trial here.

UNIFY TRANSACTIONAL AND ANALYTICAL WORKLOADS
SingleStore creates a new category that will change the future of Databases and Data Platforms by adding support for Hybrid Transaction Analytical Processing (HTAP) in its architecture. So, what does this mean? In its core architecture, SingleStore can process OLAP and OLTP transactions at the same time using the same data while you don’t have to worry about the consistency of the data. With its smart architecture OLTP (transactional) data is processed in memory while OLAP (analytical) data is processed in memory and disc columnstore. This is called Universal Storage which brings new possibilities to the table.

SIMPLIFIED ARCHITECTURE
With a database that supports this and the multi-models like No-SQL, Time Series, Geospatial, Full Text Search, relational models enriched with procedures and functions, there is less to no need for copying data over and over.

But where does this leave the traditional Extract, Transform & Load (ETL)? As we all know, ETL is costly and requires a lot of maintenance. It also brings more complexity in the lineage and traceability of the data.  And the biggest downside: we’ve created a next version of the data which also needs to be managed.

NO MORE ETL?
There will always be the need to copy certain data. For instance, to historize data or to integrate data from various data sources. The main difference is that data that’s already in the Single Store database does not have to be copied over and over. You now can only copy data that needs to be kept for certain purposes and is only temporary in the database. With its ability to use the HTAP-features, data can be selected on the fly for transactional and analytical purposes and presented virtually in views. This reduces the complexity of data transformations and provides you benefits like:

  • Lower data latency
  • Less data copies to worries about
  • Simpler data architecture
  • Transactional data can be extended to support real-time analytical purposes

By using SingleStore multi-model architecture, it’s no longer needed to copy data to other types of databases to support specific database workloads. As the architecture is built to scale out, it can easily grow to meet your demands.

LESS IS MORE
In every organization, the number of databases has increased over the years. Sometimes databases are from one vendor, but most of the time you have multiple vendor databases that support various operational and analytical workloads. With SingleStore these databases can be reduced to a single database and one SQL language with all the necessary functionalities. Specific functions from databases can be migrated to the MYSQL language with SingleStore. This reduces complexity, data management and costs at a next level. With the “runs everywhere” scenario, you can use SingleStore on-premises, in a self-hosted Cloud, Hybrid or directly as a Managed DBaas. If you are working on a lift and shift scenario from on-premises to the cloud, you are now able to rationalize your data architecture before or while moving to the cloud. As Single Store is multi-cloud, switching is a possibility without the need for a technical migration. Flexibility is key.

DATA MANAGEMENT
With more and more databases and data collections, the need for data management and a user-friendly data catalog is required to optimize the use of data for various purposes. With a simplified architecture, Single Store can provide you all the rich metadata that you need, to populate your data catalog of your choice.
