TIBCO Data Virtualization 8.4.0 brings a new standard in self service data analytics

Connected Data Group’s first-hand experience with the Drag & Drop functionality of the Web UI that will bring data users closer to the data

Since the release of TIBCO® Data Virtualization 8.4.0 in March 2021, Philip du Maine, Senior Data Architect and Antoine Stelma, co-founder and Lead Data Architect at Connected Data Group, a TIBCO Silver Partner for the EMEA region and specializing in implementing Data & Analytics solutions, experienced the newest features for graphical data workflows with the new self service user interface. When asked what value the new release adds, Philip and Antoine, who have a combined total of more than 10 years of experience with the implementation of Data Virtualization at numerous customers, answer without hesitation: “With TDV 8.4.0 self service data virtualization has arrived!”

On top of the existing advantages of TDV that turbocharged analytics by providing one single virtual layer to link and publish data from disparate data sources in real-time, TDV 8.4.0 allows business users, data scientists and data engineers to create logical data views with a graphical user interface, tailored to their self-service data and analytical supporting access to:

  • Any and All Data – Any dataset they might need, from anywhere and everywhere
  • Anytime Data – Datasets that are up-to-the-minute fresh and available on demand
  • Accurate Data – Datasets that are trustworthy, with lineage back to the source
  • Easy Data – Datasets that are easy to find, understand, access, combine, and use

NEW SELF SERVICE WEB USER INTERFACE
The TIBCO Data Virtualization web user interface is a self-service data provisioning and data catalog interface that gives you the power to search and find available data to create and publish your own views that best address your needs. These tailored views, prior to be authorized by IT, can then be consumed in your 3rd party downstream apps.

Using the easy-to-use web interface, data engineers, TDV developers and business analysts can easily search for available datasets in the Data Catalog. Self-service users can create virtual datasets, perform complex (SQL) queries to manipulate data, export and publish the result set. The user-friendly graphical interface’s drag and drop feature lets you do all these with limited or no knowledge of SQL.

NEW FLOW EDITOR
The Flow Editor provides the user a self-service interface to create a view from tables in different data sources and manipulate the data using the column filters, JOIN, INTERSECT and other query options. The resulting dataset can be published for consumption in TDV Studio and other client tools the user may have access to.

NEW DATA CATALOG
The Data Catalog provides a complete view into all securely accessible datasets, allowing you to gain a quick understanding of what data is available for your use. You can quickly and securely analyze on-premises and cloud datasets together through the search and data preview capabilities of the data catalog using TIBCO’s patented data virtualization engine.

NEW DRAG & DROP FEATURES
HTML interfaces enable applications to use drag-and-drop features in browsers. The user may select draggable elements with a mouse, drag those elements to a droppable element, and drop them by releasing the mouse button. A translucent representation of the draggable elements follows the pointer during the drag operation. For web sites, extensions, and XUL applications, you can customize which elements can become draggable, the type of feedback the draggable elements produce, and the droppable elements.

OTHER NEW FEATURES AND ENHANCEMENTS
TIBCO Data Virtualization 8.4.0 delivers the datasets your analytics team requires with the breakthrough speed and analytics-effective operations your business demands with new features and enhancements in the following areas:

  • Cloud File System Adapter, to support different cloud-based file system-based data sources
Currently TDV 8.4 includes supporting the file systems, Amazon S3, Azure Data Lake Storage, Local File Storage and the formats Parquet and Delimited file format.
  • Data Sources Improvements, to support DDL clauses in Vertica and Teradata
TDV 8.4 support the following DDL clauses in Vertica; BROADCAST, PARTITION BY, CLUSTER BY, ORDER BY and [UNIQUE|NO] PRIMARY INDEX in Teradata. TDV 8.4 is also upgraded with the new version of Liveview Client to the latest Data Streams Client.
  • API Enhancements, to support DSL through JDBC/ODBC/ADO.net protocols
  • New Web User Interface a self-service data provisioning and data catalog web user interface

INTELLIGENT & TAILOR MADE DATA ANALYTICS
“By implementing Data Virtualization to the (existing) data architecture we make it easier for organizations to collect and manage their data. Our customers experience higher access speeds, reduced time for development, increased focus on intelligent analysis for better business solutions and faster innovations by using tailor made analytics.”, Antoine summarized.
